| 2003: Tyler Palko was unable to win the backup quarterback spot over Luke Getsy in 2003 but will be in the mix for the starting spot in 2004. Both he and Getsy had very good 2003 spring practices
At West Allegheny HS, Tyler was the leader of three straight successful WPIAL Class AAA championship campaigns in which the team also advanced to the PIAA title game, winning the state championship in 2001. That season, as a senior, he passed for 1,887 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 628 yards and 8 touchdowns. Over his career at West Allegheny, Tyler threw for 5,553 yards and rushed for 1,681 yards. Honors garnered by Palko include Associated Press 2001 Big School Player of the year, Associated Press Big School All-State Team (3 times), second team USA Today All-American, Pittsburgh Post Gazette WPIAL Class AAA Player of the Year, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "Fabulous 22", Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Player of the Year, and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review "Terrific 25". PrepStar rated him as the No. 1 quarterback in the East and No. 6 nationally. SuperPrep rated him 10th nationally.
