Although it was a tough loss and a game Pitt could have easily won, the Panthers gave us much to be proud of this season. They set a school record for total victories with a 29-6 overall record, plus they set a school record for Big East Conference wins in a season with 13 wins. Pitt was picked next to last in the West division of the Big East and ended up West Division Champions. This was the first time the Panthers have made it to the Sweet 16 since 1974 and tied their all-time best with two wins in the NCAA tournament. Ben Howland was named the Naismith national coach of the year and the USBWA national coach of the year. Brandon Knight was named 3^rd team All-American and 1^st team All-Big East. Chad Johnson was the only senior on this years team and he did a very good job coming off the bench all season. All 5 starters return next season, plus 2 of the 3 top reserves. Pitt also will welcome blue-chip point guard recruit Carl Krauser, who will fill a much-needed backup point guard position for the Panthers next season. The Panthers have been ranked as high as #7 in the country this season by USA Today/ESPN coach’s poll and # 9 in the country by the AP. Next year the Panthers should be a pre-season Top 10 ranked team and a favorite to win the Big East West division once again. Keep in mind that Boston College returned almost everyone this year after a super 2000-2001 season, but they struggled this whole season. Pitt though, will be playing in a brand new, state of the art convocation center on campus next season, and should establish themselves as one of the best teams in the country once again.
