GAME OF THE WEEK

at Cincinnati 47 … Connecticut 45

In a wild and crazy game, Cincinnati cranked out 711 yards of total offense and was up 30-10 at halftime, but had to hang on for dear life at the end. UC QB Zach Collaros threw for 480 yards and ran for 75 more, but Robert McClain sparked a UConn run with an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Jordan Todman ran for four touchdowns on the day including two in the fourth, but the Huskies failed on a two-point conversion attempt and were down 40-38 with just over five minutes to play. UC appeared to put the game away with Isaiah Pead ran for a 14-yard score on a fourth down conversion, but Connecticut came right back with Marcus Easley catching a nine-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds to play. The Bearcats recovered the onside kick.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cincinnati QB Zach Collaros completed 29-of-37 passes for 480 yards and a score, and he ran 13 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Connecticut.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Cincinnati
… at Cincinnati 47 ... Connecticut 45 ... Cincinnati had to battle way too hard considering the offense did whatever it wanted to do against the Connecticut defense. The Bearcat D couldn’t close as the Huskies mounted a furious comeback, but the landmine was sidestepped and once again the offense looked incredible. Zach Collaros has gone from backup to possible Big East Player of the Year with the way he’s making things happen with both his legs and his arm, but he’s getting help. Mardy Gilyard played a whale of a game, making 12 catches for 172 yards while doing a great job of blocking for the ground game. If nothing else, the Bearcats are keeping the pressure on at 9-0 with games against West Virginia and Illinois up next on national TV.

Connecticut … at Cincinnati 47 ... Connecticut 45 ... It’s almost like UConn is inventing ways to lose thrilling, close battles. On the one hand, the team is roughly five plays away from being unbeaten, but the reality is that the defense isn’t coming through when it needs to and the great tear from the offense is being wasted. At 4-5, the there’s a lot of work to be done to get to a bowl with at Notre Dame, Syracuse and South Florida still to play, needing to win two of the three. If the balance is there and the offense keeps on producing, eventually the breaks will come UConn’s way. They have to.

Louisville … at West Virginia 17 ... Louisville 9 ... There’s not a lot to get excited about with a 3-6 record and an 0-4 start in Big East play, but Darius Ashley has turned out to be a nice looking back to keep working around. The offense simply can’t score. Period. The yards are coming here and there, and the defense came up with one of its best games of the year against West Virginia, but for all the positives there were only two field goals. If the Cardinals can’t beat Syracuse next week, the Steve Kragthorpe era will be all but over.

Pitt
… at Pitt 37 ... Syracuse 10 ... Everyone is talking about Cincinnati still, but Pitt has a shot to shake up with world with the meat of its schedule coming up. The offense took a little while, but it got the job done against Syracuse with good balance and few mistakes, while the defense forced three turnovers and didn’t allow a touchdown until the final minute. Can the O keep up in firefights with Notre Dame, West Virginia, and Cincinnati over the next three games? It’s going to be fun to see what this team can really do.

Rutgers
… Didn’t Play This Week

South Florida
… Didn’t Play This Week

Syracuse
… at Pitt 37 ... Syracuse 10 ... There’s no pop to the passing game without Mike Williams, but Delone Carter had a nice afternoon against a good Pitt defense. The Orange can’t seem to put together a full game, and the offense isn’t coming close to producing in Big East play. But as crazy as this might seem, and as ugly as the season has been, if they can come up with an upset win at Louisville next week, all of a sudden, they’re in a position for a bowl by winning out. No, that’s not going to happen, but the coaching staff can sell it to the players that there’s still reason to keep on fighting, even though the offense is a wreck and the defense can’t stop anyone’s passing game.

West Virginia
… at West Virginia 17 ... Louisville 9 ... West Virginia didn’t exactly go through the motions against Louisville, but this was hardly the game the team was looking to have after the loss at South Florida. The run defense struggled yet again, while the offense sputtered and coughed with now passing game and little running pop with Noel Devine struggling through an ankle injury. The Mountaineers had better step up their game in a big hurry or they’re going to struggle to get a win in the final three games at Cincinnati, Pitt, and at Rutgers. However, the Big East title is still there for the taking.
