Hometown Pitt Offers Garner

Brashear athlete Manasseh Garner

Growing up in the area and playing football at Brashear High School in Pittsburgh's City League, Manasseh Garner always hoped he could continue his career at his hometown university.

After Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt personally made him a scholarship offer prior to the Panthers' second scrimmage Saturday morning, Manasseh Garner talked to Panther Digest about it.

"I'm real happy about that,'' Garner said, smiling from ear-to-ear the entire time. Coach Wannstedt, he's a great guy, and he just offered me. I'm very happy right now.''

Garner is a talented athlete who can play on offense or defense and make an impact either way. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and sub-4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, Garner can be a big-play wide receiver for sure.

However, his toughness and athleticism, not to mention his speed, could make him an attractive outside linebacker candidate in a couple years when he puts on some weight. Schools like Maryland and Minnesota, which offered him before Pitt, as well as Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State, West Virginia and Cincinnati are recruiting him as an athlete.

"That's what they tell me,'' Garner said. "They like me either way, as a receiver or linebacker, and that's fine with me. I like both. I have another year in high school, so it's still up in the air where I'll play in college. Coach (David) Walker, who's recruiting me at Pitt, I'm sure he wants me on offense.

"I've taken a couple visits. Maryland was a nice campus, and the coaches are nice. But Pitt is my hometown team, and I'm glad they finally offered me. I like the coaches and all the great facilities. I had a nice talk with Coach Wannstedt and and sat in on the receiver meeting. I really enjoyed that.''

Garner is a sprinter on the Brashear track team and was a big-play receiver for the Bulls this past fall with 52 catches for 702 yards and 10 touchdowns. He had six sacks and three interceptions on defense.
