"This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time," Hawkins said. "I called Bob Lichtenfels when I decided it was time. He covered me in high school and always said he'd hire me when I was ready. I look forward to working with him, we're from the same area back home and I want to learn everything I can from him."
Lichtenfels, the Eastern/Midwestern Regional Manager for Scout.com was excited about the hire and the chance to work with a pupil that he once covered.
"Hawk called me a few weeks ago and he said he was entertaining some other offers from other media outlets," Lichtenfels said." He told me that he remembered me telling him about five years ago that when his playing days were up that I'd hire him. I do remember that, the kid has a fire and a passion for this business that you need to be successful.
"Hawk knows the game as well as anyone," Lichtenfels continued. "He actually interned for a PA high school site on Rivals when he was still in high school. He is a very well spoken young man and I think he'll have a huge career in the field if he decides to follow it.
Hawkins will cover recruiting on a few of the sites around the region and be an assistant to Lichtenfels. Hawkins has a good feel for the prospects in Ohio and Pennsylvania and can add a lot to the network.
"My focus is having Andrew cover a lot of Pennsylvania and Ohio." Lichtenfels added. "That will be helping sites that cover Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Michigan, Cincinnati and others who recruit the region."
Hawkins is originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania and has been surrounded by football his entire life. His father, Artrell Hawkins Sr., was a PITT Panther in the late 70's and went on to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1980. All of Andrew's brothers also experienced their share of success on the football field. His oldest brother, Artrell Hawkins Jr., played college football at the University of Cincinnati and then went on to enjoy a 10 year NFL career. He retired from the New York Jets in 2008. Another brother, Avery Hawkins, Played college football at Division II powerhouse California (Pa), where he is currently a defensive assistant coach working with the defensive backs. Lastly, his younger brother is Pittsburgh Panther redshirt freshman OL, Wayne Jones. Andrew is also the cousin of former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro-Bowler, Carlton Haselrig and the CFL's most outstanding player, Geroy Simon with the B.C. Lions.
Andrew played both wide receiver and cornerback at the University of Toledo, where he was a three year letter winner and starter. Andrew was the first two-way player at Toledo in the last 40 years. Following the 2008 NFL draft, Andrew had a quick stint with the Cleveland Browns as a slot receiver. Besides his playing experience, Andrew has coached with the University of Toledo (2008), Scouted for the Detroit Lions (2008), Evaluated with Rivals.com (2005-2006), Scouted for Metro Index (2005-2007), and performed high school football analysis for Pennsylvania Sports Fever(2006).
