Carswell A Big 2010 Talent

The Sto-Rox High School football team hasn't gotten this much attention from big-time college football recruiters since Temple quarterback Adam DiMichele was a senior in 2003.

For those checking out the Vikings games this fall to watch strong-armed junior quarterback Paul Jones, one also won't be able to miss 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior wideout Andrew Carswell.

Carswell caught more than 20 passes as Jones' secondary receiver last year for the McKees Rocks, Pa. school, but the two should be the top quarterback-wideout duo in the WPIAL during the next two seasons.

"Jones and Carswell both have early offers from Pittsburgh, and both favor the Panthers,'' Scout.com Regional Recruiting Manager Bob Lichtenfels said. "(Carswell) and Jones want to go to school together, and (both) may make an early (recruiting) decision.''

Those who watched Carswell at Pitt's recent Prospects Camp had to be impressed. He was difficult to stop and dominated all the one-on-one drills. With his size and speed, Carswell already looks like he could be a college receiver.

And he clearly enjoyed himself at the camp.

"I really think it's wonderful to come to a camp like this,'' Carswell said. "You can get some experience against some top athletes around the state and get a little taste of college. And that's what I like about it the most.

"The coaches have been great, showing us a lot about the game, and this a great facility at Pitt. The indoor field, the outdoor ones and being right next to the Steelers, that's really great. It's an excellent opportunity for anybody.''

The Panthers certainly have liked what they've seen from Carswell already, and the young wideout has been impressed by Pitt as well.

"Pitt definitely is an up-and-coming team this year,'' Carswell said. "They've been getting better every year, bringing in a lot of good players here. I think Pitt's going to be a big player in the Big East, and maybe I can be part of that someday. So, we'll see what happens when I get back in school.''

Carswell will get many written scholarship offers this fall in an attempt by schools to get a jump on their 2010 recruiting classes.
