Brown Wants Tigers Connection Reopened

There aren't any former teammates on the Pitt football team, and it's been a while since a McKeesport, Pa. High School grad has played for the Panthers.

However, Dana Brown, a 6-foot, 256-pound lineman, is hopeful that he can become the first Tigers football player to matriculate to Pittsburgh since linebacker Jason Chavis (1992-96). But, first, Brown will need a scholarship offer from the Panthers.

In an attempt to earn one, Brown performed for the Pitt coaches in person at a recent Prospects Camp. It's likely that the Panthers will take another look at him when McKeesport's season gets under way this fall.

"It's great to come to these camps and get a lot more exposure,'' Brown said. "There's a lot of good coaches here, so I can learn a lot from them. And it just gets my name out there. They've seen some tape on me, but now they can see me work out in person. And that's what it's all about, to be seen.

"I like to compete, and these camps allow you to compete against a lot of the best players in the state. I'm going to play against some of these guys in the upcoming season, so it's a great opportunity for me. And I'm looking forward to taking advantage of it. That's what I need to do.''

Brown isn't totally under the radar, as Ohio University and Temple already have tendered offers. Akron and Buffalo have shown interest, along with Pitt, but the Panthers are among Brown's favorites since they are close by.

"It would be nice to go to Pitt, since they're close to my hometown, but I haven't heard too much from them just yet,'' Brown said. "That's why I came to their camp, though, to show them that I'm a player. I'd like to get an offer from Pitt, because I really like the Panthers.

"And it would be easy for my friends and family to go to the games. I wouldn't get homesick, either, which is a possibility if I go away to school. You never know, but I've been down here before and watch Pitt whenever I get the chance. The Panthers are going to be a good team this year.''

Brown also attended a recent prospects camp at West Virginia.
