A solid two-sport star at Brashear High School in Pittsburgh's City League, Ed Tinker
has received scholarship offers from the University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia
, Michigan State
have also shown a good deal of interest lately.
"I've made a few unofficial visits,'' Tinker said. "I come to Pitt all the time, and I've been to West Virginia and UConn. I loved it up there. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to fly out to Iowa. We'll see what happens with that, but I think I'll wait for a while before I make my decision.
"I've been to all the camps, the (Scout.com Combine) here in Pittsburgh and Metro camp. The Nike camp. I just wanted to make a good impression at those to see if I could get more offers, and I got a couple more. Maybe I'll get even more before my senior season begins.''
Tinker had a solid junior season at Brashear with 36 catches for 516 yards and three touchdowns, but his numbers could be even better this fall as he learns more how to best utilize his size and speed. Tinker has consistently run in the 4.5-second range in the 40-yard dash, which is excellent for someone his size.
Tinker has some pretty good moves on the basketball court as well and is hopeful that plays into his college decision, too. He averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists per game as a forward.
"I guess I can make my decision sometime during the football season, but I don't know for sure,'' Tinker said. "I want to pick a school where I can play both sports, football and basketball, because I really like both.
"But it's OK if that doesn't work out. I guess I can just stick with football, because I think I have a pretty good future in that sport. It's just that I'm not ready to quit playing basketball. But we'll see what happens.''
Tinker still has a few more things to attend to this summer. Of course, there's finishing up his junior year at Brashear and enjoying being out of school for a while. But there's also the matter of a little payback.
"I went to the 7-on-7 passing camp at Pitt last year and the City (League) camp,'' Tinker said. "Those are the only two camps I went to last year, and they went really good. I had a good time, and I learned a lot. And (Brashear) had a pretty good camp in the 7-on-7s at Pitt. We made it to the semis.
"We lost in that game and didn't make it to the championship, but I want to come back this year and do even better. We'll be looking to win the whole thing. I know a lot of the guys at that camp, and there's teams from all over. so we'll see what we can do against some of the best players in the area.''
Tinker said that West Virginia probably is his slight leader right now.
"I always liked their offense,'' Tinker said. "They pass the ball a lot and they recruit a lot of players from this area. They have great coaches and have been doing really well recently.''
Expect Tinker to make his decision before his senior year begins this fall.
Ed Tinker has an idea where he wants to go to college, but since he continues to impress scouts and receive offers the 6-foot-1, 188-pound wideout has tabled his decision for now.
