Gilbert Brown a record setter

Gilbert Brown (6-ft-6 inches, 190 pounds) from South Kent Prep School in South Kent, CT was the first player to join the Pitt Panthers basketball recruiting class of 2006. He has been referred to as "the most athletic perimeter player in prep school basketball". The PantherDigest.com recently spoke with Gilbert about a record setting year.

"We finished our season 17-17. I'm exactly happy with our record but we won our last four game and finished the season strong. I'm proud of that," stated Gilbert Brown.

Brown finished the season with a 25 point performance in a victory over Rise Academy on Sunday afternoon. He finished his career as South Kent Prep School's all-time scorer with 1,157 career points.

"My overall numbers just came out. It was an emotional experience for me to finish as our all time leading scorer. I hope to bring my scoring ability to the Panthers next season."

Scout.com ranks Brown a "four-star" recruit and the 18th ranked shooting guard in the nation. Gilbert, a native of Harrisburg, PA, chose the Panthers over Maryland, West Virginia, Georgetown and Wake Forest. He is a versatile player capable of contributing at the "2" (shooting guard) or "3" (small forward). Gilbert averaged 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game this season.

"I can finally start to focus on my future and my time with the Panthers. They have more scoring options this year with Ron Ramon, Keith Benjamin and Levance Fields stepping up. I still think I can bring a scoring threat to the team. I'm also athletic and I believe I don't think they have a player like me on their team."

The Panthers have developed a reputation for tough, physical defense. Brown is well aware of the reputation and is fully prepared to contribute next season. "I have talked with Coach (Joe) Lombardi about this," he said. "I'm going to hit the gym and work on my defense all summer until I join the team in the second summer semester. I'm athletic, quick and long. My length is a great asset when protecting people on the perimeter."

Brown continues to recruit his teammates Matthew Bryan-Amaning (6-ft-9 inches, 225 pounds) and Ayodele Coker (6-ft-10 inches, 230 pounds). Bryan-Amaning and Coker are considered amongst the top 2007 prospects in the nation. Matthew has already received an offer from the Panthers.

"I want to get to Pitt and contribute as soon as possible. I can't wait to get there."
