Central Catholic standout to visit Pitt

The University of Pittsburgh is currently recruiting a pair of blue-chip players from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA. One of those players, two-way standout Lamont Smith (5-foot-8.5, 165 pounds), talks to the PantherDigest.com about his upcoming visit to Pitt.

"I'm looking at Pitt, Boston College, Virginia, Iowa, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Those are the top schools that come to mind," stated Lamont Smith. "I look forward to heading down to Pitt this weekend for their junior day. I met Coach (Dave) Wannstedt before at a banquet. He seemed like a really cool guy. Hopefully I'll meet him again."

Smith has been a two-year starter for Central Catholic High School. He has been a two-way standout at running back and cornerback. Lamont rushed for over 2,000 yards and scored 29 touchdowns last season.

"I like running back, but most schools are recruiting me at cornerback," said Smith. "I'm a strong man to man cover corner. My speed is a big asset at that position too."

Many scouts have questioned whether Smith can succeed on the next level due to his height. Lamont was quick to dispel those rumors. "My play speaks for itself," he said. "I'm very physical for my size and I shut down receivers."

Smith was named second team Associated Press Class AAAA, first team PA Football News All-State, and first team All-WPIAL as a junior. His teammate, offensive lineman Stefan Wisniewski (6-ft-4 inches, 280 pounds), will attend Pitt's junior day as well. Stefan, a four-star prospect, is considered one of the top prospects in the state of Pennsylvania.

"Playing time is going to be important to me. I will evaluate the depth chart for each school I'm looking at. I would like to go to a winning team and a school with strong academics."
