Scout.com ranks Mathews the 42nd best defensive end in the nation. He had an outstanding senior season registering 87 tackles, 26 sacks and 1 interception.
It was recently reported that Michigan held a slight lead over the Panthers. When asked if he had a favorite entering the weekend, he stated, "No, right now Pitt and Michigan are basically tied. There are things I like about both school. I have no favorite."
"Michigan was nice and they have a good program. The trip was well organized. I really liked the players at Pitt and I felt comfortable there. They have been after me since the start of recruiting."
McKenzie has completed four visits to Ohio State (10/15), Pitt (12/2), Michigan (12/9) and Boston College (1/20). He's a bright and articulate young man with a 3.1 grade point average and a solid 1160 score on the SAT.
Mathews did his best to articulate what will factor into his final decision. "I will be at one of the two schools for four to five years. I need to make the decision based on my gut. I need to go to the place that made me feel most comfortable."
"I can't go wrong with either school. It's going to be a tough decision this weekend."
