Panthers next commitment?

A year ago the University of Pittsburgh ventured to the state of Florida to successfully recruit super sleeper Gus "The Bus" Mustakas. It appears Head Coach Dave Wannstedt and staff may have found another incredible diamond in the rough.

The Pitt Panthers are currently pursing a number of quality defensive end recruits. A new name has emerged from the pack. Greg Romeus (6 foot 5 inches, 220 pounds) from Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, FL visited the Panthers over the weekend. Romeus previously committed to Central Florida but recently decided to look into additional opportunities.

"I could go into details, but I simply loved everything about the visit," stated Greg Romeus. "I loved everything athletically and academically. It was a great visit and you could tell the coaching staff put a lot of work into it."

Greg was a virtual unknown prior to the season. A neophyte to the game, he was considered a basketball prospect due to his height and athleticism. Coral Glades High School Head Football Coach Rex Nottage coaxed Romeus into playing football and he improved exponentially throughout the season. He registered 40 tackles, nearly 20 sacks and was named the most valuable player by his teammates.

"I really like the academic portion of the visit. It was well done. The facilities were incredible. I felt very comfortable with the team and coaches. Coach Wannstedt told me I had a tremendous opportunity at Pitt. He didn't pressure me to commit."

When asked about his strengths, he stated, "I'm a pure speed rusher. If I'm not sacking the quarterback, I'm making the quarterback rush their play. I like to think I'm disruptive. Right now I'm 220 pounds but I have the frame to put on more weight."

A number of upper echelon program have contacted Romeus but he appears to be down to Pitt and Central Florida. Both schools have offered scholarships. When asked if he had a favorite at this time, he stated, "The Panthers are at the top of my list. I should have a decision made soon."

"Greg looks and plays like the Miami Dolphins' Jason Taylor," stated Head Coach Rex Nottage. "I'm not saying he's as good as Taylor, but he can get there. There is no better sleeper in the state of Florida. He's tall, athletic and has all of the potential in the world. He's only been playing for a year and he's the best football player that I have coached."

"Our school has only been in existence for roughly a year and a half. Greg has put us on the football map. At least people know who we are. He's attracted quite a bit of attention. Greg has the frame to grow, he runs a 4.6 forty-yard dash and he a big playmaker. If we needed a big play, he made them."
