"I called Coach [Bob] Junko and said I have made my decision, I'm fully committed to Pittsburgh
," Smith said.
Cranberry Township (Pa.) Seneca Valley quarterback Kevan Smith (6-3, 215, 4.8) has been one of the most impressive and fast rising prospects we have seen this spring and early summer. The Panthers offered him a scholarship last Wednesday after a strong 15-20 minute passing session. He was attempting to wait a few weeks, but today he decided to end the process.
"I kept telling myself why keep putting it off," Smith said. "My heart is at Pittsburgh, I have really fallen in love with that place, and I feel it's the best fit for me. I was going to do it after Coach [Dave] Wannstedt returned from vacation, he's leaving for two weeks, but we figured we'll go down there tonight and visit before he leaves.
The Smith family will venture to UPMC and then it's off to The Cheesecake Factory to celebrate his birthday.
"My life is pretty good right now, I never could've dreamed this would happen to me," Smith said.
Smith's father Walter was hoping his son would stay close to home, and the two have really bonded throughout this whole process.
"My family is so happy right now, me and my father are so much closer after doing all this traveling," Smith said.
Smith held offers from Pittsburgh, Central Michigan, and Toledo, it was widely expected that his offer sheet would grow during his senior season. Smith is relatively inexperienced after playing in only two games his junior season. Although the standout quarterback did manage to throw for almost 600 yards and seven touchdowns in those two games.
Smith is the Panther's ninth verbal pledge, and it's eighth from Western Pennsylvania.
In a span of two days Kevan Smith has lived as well as any teenager could ask for, his family celebrated his birthday today by buying him a Chevy Colorado truck, and to top it off he has made a verbal pledge to Dave Wannstedt and the Pittsburgh Panthers.
The Panthers have just received a verbal pledge from one of the top quarterbacks in the Northeast.
