Panthers land Florida standout

The University of Pittsburgh has received a lot of press recently, as they are entrenched in a soap opera surrounding the future of Head Coach Walt Harris. Regardless of what happens with Walt Harris, the rest of the Panthers staff continues to do their jobs. The Panthers have landed their second verbal commitment in as many days.

Lantana (Fla.) Santaluces linebacker Steve Dell (6-2, 230, 4.7) is currently in Pittsburgh taking his official visit. Dell contacted Scout.com recently and informed us that he committed to Pittsburgh last Sunday.

"Coach Partridge came to my house last Sunday for an in-home visit, and I committed," said Dell

Dell is a late riser of sorts on recruiting boards. Florida sends over 200 kids a year to D-1 schools, so it's relatively easy to get lost in the shuffle. Dell started to receive interest after attending summer camps at Miami and Florida. Besides Pittsburgh, Dell had received offers from West Virginia, Illinois, and Central Florida. North Carolina State and Florida have been showing a lot of interest.

While Dell is committed to Pittsburgh, he is a little worried about the coaching situation.

"Everyone is wondering what is happening with Walt Harris right now," said Dell "Everyone seems to think Coach Rhoads will replace him if he leaves, so we'll see what happens."

As a junior Dell earned 1st Team All- Palm Beach County honors as a defensive end. This season Dell was moved to inside linebacker by Santaluces head coach Bill Bretherick. Bretherick spoke to us about his prized pupil.

"Pittsburgh is getting a good one, Steve has an athletic frame and he's still growing," said Bretherick "He has good feet and moves to the ball well. Everyone wants a linebacker who is around the ball and that is Steve Dell."

Dell was recently selected to play in the Outback Steakhouse all-star game, although he'll be unable to play in the event.

"I graduate in December, so I will be in Pittsburgh when the game is played," said Dell

Dell is very versatile having played DE, TE, and LB for Santaluces. So where will he play at Pittsburgh?

"They have recruited me as a Will Linebacker."

As a Will Line backer Dell will get to play alongside of friend and former workout partner Clint Session.

"I lived in Broward County up until 9th grade, I would've gone to Blanche Ely, but we moved to Palm Beach County," said Dell "Me, and Clint worked out with Tony Sands in the off season. Sands went to Kansas and played in the NFL. He has a good reputation with fitness training in Florida."

Pittsburgh continues to get lesser named recruits late in the process from the "Sunshine State". Last year the Panthers landed Darrell Strong and Jerald Robinson late, the year before Pittsburgh landed unknown recruits Greg Lee and Joe Clermond late. Both of whom were lightly recruited.

Dell is the 15th verbal commitment for the Panthers class of 2005. Scout.com will have more on Dell's official visit to Pittsburgh tomorrow evening.
