Altoona (PA) The battle of the East versus West was waged at Mansion Park in Altoona On Saturday night. The West team seemed to be at a disadvantage talent wise, compared to the size and speed of the east squad. The West roster seemed hurt by the no-shows of DT Craig Bokor (Hopewell) a University Of Pittsburgh recruit, and QB Adam DiMichele (Sto-Rox) a Penn State recruit.
|
DiMichele announced earlier in the week that he was trying to opt out of his National Letter Of Intent with Penn State to pursue a baseball career elsewhere. According to a coach on the West staff DiMichele didn't even call in to announce that he would be a no-show.
Without DiMichele the West could never establish an effective passing game. They did have the services of a very effective RB in Fred Bacco (Baldwin) Mercyhurst College, who rushed for a game high 96 yards on 16 attempts, while scoring a touchdown. As in most All-Star games the offense must pass at least 40% of the time. For the East that was no problem for their Two-headed QB monster of Jordan Steffy (Conestoga Valley) University Of Maryland, and Jarryd Moyer (Manheim Central Catholic) University of Delaware as the two combined for 289 yards passing and 3 scores. They combined for 13 completions on 22 attempts for the game.
The East offense struck first as FB Mike Cox (Red Land) Georgia Tech, bullied his way through the West defense from 6-yards out, Nate Royer (Central Dauphin) University Of Pittsburgh added the point after to give the East a 7-0 lead. The West started to establish an effective running game behind Bacco as they mounted their own drive, which was capped of by Bacco scoring from 18 yards out. K Matt McNelis (Altoona) Lehigh University booted the PAT and tied the game at 7-7.
The tie lasted less than one minute as Moyer found a streaking WR Kervin Michaud (Pennsbury) University of Delaware for an 83-yard catch and run. The Royer PAT failed and the East had a 13-7 lead.
Moyer helped seal the West squads fate with 35 seconds to go in the first half and his team holding a 13-7 lead he hooked up on a 56 yard scoring strike to WR Charles Brooks (JP McKaskey) Hofstra University who out ran the coverage and hauled in the pass, he out juked a defender, and crossed the goaline. The East took a commanding 19-7 lead as the teams entered halftime.
The third quarter began with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Steffy to WR Gerard Madden (Steelton-Highspire) Cheyney University. The two-point conversion attempt failed and the East had a 25-7 lead.
The East then hit pay dirt again this time the fleet-footed Michaud came in motion and took a counter 50 yards to the house. Royer added the PAT and the East staked a 32-7 lead.
The Fourth quarter started out with the highly touted RB from (North Penn) Kevin Akins a Boston College recruit crossing the goaline from 7 yards out, Royer added the PAT and the East lead was now 39-7.
Paul Favers (Perry) Slippery Rock University then took the kick-off and found a seam up the right sideline for a return of 63 yards. The West then marched 32 yards in 4 plays as Favers mad a spectacular leaping catch on a 5-yard touchdown pass from QB Erik Yonish (Bethel Park) Clarion University. The two-point conversion failed.
Following All-Star game rules the West then got the ball back, but the final drive was thwarted by an interception. The east took a knee and captured the victory 39-13.
In the four year history of the newly named Pennsylvania Bowl the East has been victorious 3 times. The West won last seasons meeting.
