Freebeck Talks Pitt Commitment

Freebeck Talks Pitt Commitment

Pitt got a big commitment Sunday night, as they added quarterback Wade Freebeck to the 2014 recruiting class. Freebeck talks about his visit, and what sold him on the Pitt program.

Wade Freebeck says committing to Pitt was a no-brainer.

Freebeck became Pitt's 13th commitment in the 2014 class. He says that quarterbacks coach Brooks Bollinger's communication skills, combined with his visit here last week, was really all he needed to commit to the Panthers.

"I've been in communication with Coach Bollinger for awhile," Freebeck said. "There's a lot of good things there. I did a lot of research on the program itself, but there's nothing like going up and seeing it for yourself. I enjoyed the city. That, and just meeting with the coaches, sealed the deal."

Freebeck added that Pitt, which officially joined the ACC today, now playing in a new conference is also a bonus.

"It's definitely exciting, just seeing the schedule," Freebeck said. "The schedule in the coming years, playing some big-time schools should be fun."

Freebeck also took note of head coach Paul Chryst's track record in developing quarterbacks, even before he got to Pitt. Chryst was Wisconsin's offensive coordinator when Russell Wilson went on to become a Heisman Trophy finalist.

"Coach Chryst is really knowledgeable, and he's easy to relate to," Freebeck added. "That's definitely something big, what he did with Russell Wilson and Scott Tolzien."

Though he did say Bollinger was a big factor in recruiting, Freebeck says even before Bollinger became involved, he was aware of Pitt's reputation as a program. Dan Marino will always be a big name in South Florida because of what he did with the Miami Dolphins. He has also worked out with Marino's successor, John Congemi.

"I'm definitely a big college football fan," Freebeck said. "Pitt has always been relevant at quarterback, especially with guys like Dan Marino and John Congemi, who I train with."

Freebeck threw for 1,850 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior for Davie (FL) Western. He will transfer to St. Thomas Aquinas for his senior year.
