Derrick Randall averaged 11.3 minutes a game as a freshman, and 8.2 minutes a game this past season. He also could file a waiver with the NCAA that would allow him to play for Pitt immediately.

With a lot of roster turnover, and heading into a new conference, the 2013-14 Pitt basketball roster is looking for a new start. So is former Rutgers player Derrick Randall.

Randall decided to transfer to Pitt on Sunday, and he says he's simply looking for a new start.

"It's just a new beginning for me," Randall said. "I just want to look forward to the basketball, I'm looking for a place with passion, looking for a new start.

Randall, a 6-8, 240-pound big body, averaged 11.3 minutes a game as a true freshman and 8.2 minutes a game this past season. By NCAA rule, he would have to sit out this season. Though he wouldn't get into specifics, he wouldn't rule out the possibility of applying for a waiver, and being able to play right away this year.

"I really don't know, right now," Randall said. "I'm just worried about starting off at my new home."

Randall would be a big boost if he is able to play this year. Pitt has Talib Zanna, at 6-9, as its leading contender at center. They will also have Joseph Uchebo, who transferred in from junior college a couple of months ago. Pitt also could rely on incoming freshman Mike Young, to also fill in at center. Randall would give them a much-needed versatile body to play either the four or the five.

Overall, though, Randall said he liked the Pitt coaching staff, the campus and facilities. His decision to transfer to Pittsburgh was an easy one.

"When I met the team, on the visit, I liked everyone," Randall said. "I liked the whole visit. I liked all the facilities, the campus. I feel like this is a new home for me. I knew (assistant coach) Brandin Knight, I also knew a few players on the team from before. I felt comfortable with the team, and the coaching staff.

Randall also said he expects to be in Pittsburgh when the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro-Am League tips off next Monday night.
