Nicholson Talks Visits, Opening

Montae Nicholson took home Wide Receiver MVP honors on Sunday at The Opening, which earned him an invitation to Oregon, later this month.

Montae Nicholson came up with a brilliant idea for his performance at the Nike Football Training Camp.

Even though some schools are recruiting the four-star safety for offense, as well, Nicholson wanted to showcase his offensive skills at the camp. Not for something to tell the other schools about, but something that would give him a better shot at earning a golden ticket for The Opening.

"I talked it over with Coach Don (Smith) and my mom, and we thought it might increase my chances," Nicholson said. "I figured I'd do both. I am being recruited as a receiver, so why not. I was not opposed to it."

It worked out great for Nicholson. In addition to earning the receiver MVP nod, he had a familiar face throwing to him--7-on-7 teammate J.J. Cosentino.

"With J.J., we were in a groove," Nicholson said. "It was kind of upsetting he didn't get invited, too. I thought he did pretty well. It would have been nice for him to get it."

It's been a pretty successful run for Nicholson in the spring. The previous weekend, his 4 x 100 relay team won a state championship with a time of 41.6. He also ran a 14.09 in the 110 hurdles, and had a distance of 23 1/4 in the long jump.

With The Opening invite in hand, Nicholson is also looking to add a few unofficial visits. He figures Oregon will be one, as well as some other schools he would not have had the time to visit before. After that, he'd like to narrow down his list of schools.

"I'd like to narrow it down soon, and take some unofficials," Nicholson said. "I'll narrow it down towards the end of summer. Oregon, I was trying to get to Stanford, but I'm not sure. Florida State, Georgia Tech--a lot of places that I didn't have the time, earlier, for the drive."

Shorter trips like Pitt and Penn State are also a certainty.

"I will probably go to Pitt again, I'll check out Penn State--just to go see the staff again," Nicholson said. "I'm trying to get to West Virginia, soon. Other than that, I'm not sure of where else."
