Panthers score all three of its runs in the fifth inning, unable to add anything after that.

Clearwater, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (41-16) fell to Notre Dame (32-24), 5-3, in the second round of the Big East Championship this afternoon at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.

“It was a tough ballgame,” said head coach Joe Jordano. “We did not play clean baseball today and that ended up hurting us. Give credit to Notre Dame they came up with some big hits with runners in scoring position and they pitched well and that was the difference.”

Pat Connaughton (4-2) earned the win for the Irish, while Matt Wotherspoon (JR/Mountain Top, Pa.) took the loss after throwing 7.2 innings allowing two earned and striking out seven.

Notre Dame struck first in the bottom of the second scoring a pair of unearned runs after a Pitt error. The Irish added two more in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 4-0.

The Panthers answered with three in the top of the fifth inning. Dylan Wolsonovich (FR/Ford City, Pa.) and Stephen Vranka (JR/Monroeville, Pa.) reached on an error and infield single respectively to start out the inning. Notre Dame was able to get a pair of outs before Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) worked an 0-2 pitch into right field for a two RBI single to get Pitt on the board. After a Steven Shelinsky Jr. walk, Sam Parente (SR/Pittston, Pa.) ripped a single into right to cut the Irish lead to 4-3.

Notre Dame scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to retake a two run lead and held on for the 5-3 win.

“We have to clear our minds and come back hard tomorrow,” Jordano said.

The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow, May 24, when they face Seton Hall (37-18) at 3 p.m. in the elimination bracket.
