McKenzie Updates Recruitment

McKenzie Updates Recruitment

As Shai McKenzie waits for some summer visits, he's been busy with track season. Just last week, McKenzie ran a 10.68 in the 100-meter run. In the midst of everything, he took some time to update us on his recruitment.

With track in full swing, Shai McKenzie says the interest continues to pick up. However, recruiting is taking a little back seat while he competes in track.

"Yeah, it's picked up a little, but it's hard," McKenzie added. "I don't really have much time to talk (to the schools)."

His most recent offers came from Florida State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. Even with track going on, McKenzie has found the time to get to Pittsburgh twice in the last couple of weeks. Once was for a closed practice at Heinz Field. The other was Pitt's spring game at Bethel Park.

At the spring game, it sounds like he had a chance to meet several of Pitt's 2013 signees, as well as a couple of fellow local prospects in his 2014 class.

"I talked to a couple guys, I talked to Michael Grimm," McKenzie said. "I talked to this offensive lineman from West Catholic, Jaryd (Jones-Smith). I talked to Zach Challingsworth, Tyler Boyd. They were all talking about how they like the place.

"My experience was pretty good. I got to watch my position, the running backs. I know (in the spring game), they fumbled a lot, so they're looking for some help."

With all the local recruits, as well as Pitt signees trying to sell Pitt on him, does it add to the pressure?

"No, it's not really pressure," McKenzie said. "I just talk recruiting with them, and talk about my interest."

McKenzie says playing will be a factor in his decision. Right now, Isaac Bennett is the guy to beat out for the starting running back position. Bennett will be a senior when McKenzie starts school in 2014, wherever that may be. It's clear that Pitt's running back situation, whether it be 2013 or 2014, is something he's taking note of.

"It really doesn't matter, if close or far away, playing time does matter," McKenzie said. "It looks like (at Pitt), everybody does get equal reps.

"I talked the the running backs coach (Desmond Robinson) a little. He mentioned that they're going to have a new starting running back this year, and they're looking for a running back (in the 2014 class).

After the short trips to Pittsburgh this spring, McKenzie now turns his attention to the summer, where he will make stops at Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida State in June. All three schools have offered, and all three schools will be first-time visits for him.

"I really don't know too much about these schools, yet," McKenzie said. "Georgia has offered me. Georgia Tech heavily recruits me. They've all offered me. I just want to get a look at each one. My mom's side of the family is from Georgia, so I want to see what these schools have."
