Rutgers Loses Fourth Straight

Rutgers led by eight points at the half, but did not have enough to hold on for an upset of No. 24 Cincinnati. Losing 62-54 on the road, the Scarlet Knights are now losers of four consecutive games to close out January.

Rutgers led for the first 29 minutes of basketball tonight against Cincinnati, but wore down for the second time this season in a loss to the Bearcats.

Unable to remain competitive in the paint, the Scarlet Knights lost 62-54, making it four in a row after the impressive start to Big East play.

Though the Scarlet Knights held guard Cashmere Wright in check, there was no answer for Sean Kilpatrick or the shot-blocking ability of Justin Jackson off the Cincinnati bench. Kilpatrick scored 10 of his 19 points during the run that gave the Bearcats their first lead. Every time Rutgers threatened after blowing the lead at the 11-minute mark, the possession ended in a turnover or block.

Rutgers had eight shots blocked as Jackson led the way with six of his own. Rutgers (12-8, 3-6) committed 12 turnovers in the second half.

Coming off the bench because of a shoulder injury, sophomore guard Myles Mack struggled with ball control after a hot start. He led Rutgers with five turnovers and committed a flagrant foul in the second half that helped Cincinnati pull away for good.

Sophomore Elijah Carter came off the bench yet again and finished with 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

The floundering Scarlet Knights get a week off, but return to action Feb. 6 against No. 12 Louisville.
