He hasn’t even spent a week on the job, yet New York Jets newly hired general manager John Idzik is already putting out fires. Reports surfaced late Wednesday night that Woody Johnson was amenable to trading superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis because he’s not optimistic that the two sides can reach a long-term agreement. Revis has already staged two contract holdouts over the past four seasons which developed into month-long soap-operas and created a source of tension between New York’s front office and Revis’ camp.
“One of our first steps is to go through our roster in detail,” noted Idzik at Thursday’s introductory press conference. “That includes (Darrelle), that includes everybody on the roster. Then develop a comprehensive plan off of that. But it’s still a little bit premature to say.”
As the Jets approach salary cap hell, Idzik’s personnel skills and financial background will be put to the test early and often. Following two straight seasons finishing on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, the Jets brass is out with the old and in with the new; conducting a complete overhaul of their assistant coaching staff with a litany of roster moves expected in the weeks and months to follow. While Rex Ryan was given a vote of confidence by Johnson, Idzik also gave a resounding endorsement for Gang Green’s bombastic and charismatic head man.
“I look at Rex Ryan as a very accomplished coach,” noted Idzik. “He’s very energetic. He’s optimistic. He’s engaging as we all know. He engages our players and he gets them to play hard. I can speak to that from the opponents’ side. I look forward to our time together. I really do. I’m excited about it, so that, to me, was a plus.”
Attempting to shed the ‘circus’ label earned over the past two seasons, Idzik is adamant that the public’s perception of the Jets organization is far different from the reality of the situation.
“The entire building showed up to shake my hand,” said Idzik of his first day reporting to the Atlantic Health Training Center. “That’s pretty impressive that people go out of their way to introduce themselves to me and make me feel at home. When I sense that, I don’t look at it as repair. I look at it as fostering what we have here. We have a good group of people here. They’re good at what they do and it’s up to me and everybody here to join together. That’s the sense I get. I don’t sense dysfunction or anything like that. “
Heading into the 2013 season the Jets need to resolve their quarterback situation and determine whether Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow will have a role moving forward. Idzik failed to shed any light on the future of both embattled signal-callers, but iterated the need for competition at every position on the roster.
“I think what you do is you push the envelope, as far as competition, and you make sure you’re doing the best you can to improve every day," said Idzik. “The byproduct of that is sustainable success. A byproduct of that is winning football games, going into the post season and eventually bringing championships back to New York.”
