Early Start Time Not A First

Despite an 11 am kickoff announced Monday, it's not the first for Pitt in its history.

An 11 am kickoff might be different from the norm for an eastern standard time zone, but it has been done at Pitt before.

On October 13, 1979, Pitt moved its game with Cincinnati that day. The Pittsburgh Pirates were set to play an afternoon World Series game with the Baltimore Orioles that day. A total attendance of 50,883 saw the Orioles take a 3-1 Series lead. The Pirates, of course, would come back from the deficit and win the World Series, starting that next day.

Pitt and Cincinnati moved kickoff at Pitt Stadium to 10 am that day, as the Panthers prevailed with a 35-0 win before 31,620 fans that day. That game, which like this Louisville game, also played on October 13 of that year as well as the Panthers' homecoming game. Rick Trocano threw for a score, and ran for a score that day. Dan Marino--then a freshman--also threw a touchdown pass in the second half of that win.

Pitt wasn't so fortunate in an 11:14 am kickoff on November 28, 1991 against Penn State. Alex Van Pelt completed 27-of-64 passes for 324 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in a 32-20 loss to the Nittany Lions; the last game played at Pitt Stadium before the annual series ended in 1992. The two teams did not play for five years after that.

"Friday at 7, I'm fired up for it," Pitt head coach Paul Chryst joked, downplaying the significance of an earlier start time. "A coach's world can be so simple. Games are great. It's all good."
