Robinson Makes The Cut

Pitt's James Robinson will begin competing at the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship in Brazil later this week as a member of USA Basketball's U-18 team.

Colorado SPRINGS, Colo.—University of Pittsburgh incoming freshman guard James Robinson (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha Catholic H.S.) was selected one of 12 members for the 2012 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team this weekend. Team USA will depart for the 2012 FIBA Americas Under-18 championship, which takes place in Sao Sebastiao dos Paraiso, Brazil from June 16-20. The squad will continue to train through June 11 at the United States Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.

 

The FIBA Americas U18 Championship will feature eight national teams from North America, South and Central America and the Carribean. The top four finishing teams will qualify for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men. Team USA opens its five-game schedule on Saturday, June 16 vs. the Virgin Islands. It will then play Mexico on Sunday, June 17 (2 p.m.) and Brazil on Monday, June 18 (6 p.m.) before semifinal and championship round competition June 19-20.

 

Joining Robinson on the USA roster are: Nathaniel Britt, II (Gonzaga H.S., D.C./Upper Marlboro, Md.); Sam Dekker (Sheboygan Lutheran H.S./Sheboygan, Wis.); Shaq Goodwin (Southwest DeKalb H.S./Decatur, Ga.); Jerami Grant (DeMatha Catholic/Bowie, Md.); Montrezl Harrell (Hargrave Military Academy/Tarboro, N.C.); Jake Layman (King Phillip Regional H.S./Wrentham, Mass.); Rodney Purvis (Upper Room Christian/Raleigh, N.C.); Julius Randle (Prestonwood Christian Academy/ McKinney, Texas); Marcus Smart (Marcus H.S./Flower Mound, Texas); Jarnell Stokes (Memphis, Tenn.); and Rasheed Sulaimon (Strake Jesuit College Prep/Houston, Texas). Florida's Billy Donovan is serving as head coach for the squad, while Gonzaga's Mark Few and VCU's Shaka Smart are the assistant coaches.

 

Robinson will be representing USA Basketball for his second stint. He recently competed for Team USA in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit game held in Portland, Ore. on April 7.
