Turnley, Hale Named Conway Winners

Paul Chryst names Ryan Turnley and Shayne Hale as the team's most improved players during spring ball; his first Conway Award recipients.

Pittsburgh—Pitt head football coach Paul Chryst and his staff have selected the 2012 winners of the Ed Conway Award, annually presented to the most improved players of spring drills.

This year's offensive recipient is senior center Ryan Turnley (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell). The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Turnley is successfully building on his strong junior campaign when he started every single contest despite nagging foot injuries. He proved to be a catalyst for the offensive line this spring from both a leadership and performance standpoint.

The defensive honoree is senior Shayne Hale (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway). A 6-foot-4, 255-pound end, Hale is strongly competing for a prominent role on the defensive front this fall.

Chryst made the Conway Award announcement at Pitt's player family breakfast this morning at Heinz Field. The award has been annually presented since 1975 in honor of the late Ed Conway, who served as the radio play-by-play voice of Pitt football from 1970-73. A popular sports anchor with WTAE-TV, Conway passed away in 1974.
