J.J. Moore played in 23 games as a true freshman last season, and is battling Lamar Patterson for a starting spot at forward this year.

Pitt sophomore J.J. Moore has been suspended for one game as a result of participating in an unauthorized summer league game outside of the Pittsburgh area.

The school announced Moore’s suspension on Thursday afternoon. Prior to playing in the unauthorized game, Moore was not aware it was impermissable. The violation carries a mandatory one-game suspension. He will be able to return to action Sunday when Pitt hosts Rider at 6 pm. The suspension opens the door for sophomore Lamar Patterson to start at forward. Moore started Pitt’s first two exhibition games, averaging 8 points and 0.5 rebounds a game. Patterson led Pitt with 22 points in a win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday night.

Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon is not expected to comment on the matter, until after Pitt’s 2011-12 opener with Albany on Friday night.

Moore played in 23 games as a true freshman last season, averaging 3.7 points and 1.3 rebounds a game.
