Pitt announced Friday afternoon that Chris Jacobson will miss the remainder of the 2011 season with a left knee injury.

Pitt senior captain Chris Jacobson will miss the remainder of the 2011 season. Jacobson, the starting left guard, left the Iowa game with an unspecified left knee injury.

The injury will will require surgery that will be performed next week. Jacobson had started the last 17 consecutive games at left guard, dating back to the 2009 Meineke Car Care Bowl; a 19-17 Pitt win over North Carolina.

Being that the injury has occurred in the early part of the season, there seems to be optimism and that Jacobson could return for a sixth year of eligibility.

“Chris Jacobson is one of the most respected people in our program and I know every player and coach feels disappointment for him that he’ll miss the rest of the year,” Pitt head coach Todd Graham said in a prepared statement. “Fortunately, we feel optimistic about his chances to receive a sixth year from the NCAA.”

Jacobson also missed his true freshman year of 2007, after going down with a dislocated knee cap in training camp that season. He returned in 2008 as a redshirt freshman, where he played in three games that season. In 2009--in addition to making his first career start in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, Jacobson was Pitt's top reserve lineman that season.

The stage is set for redshirt sophomore Cory King to make his first career start tomorrow against Notre Dame. King ran with the first-team at right guard for a significant portion of the spring, and for the first part of training camp. He played in three games last season as a redshirt freshman.

Jacobson, a graduate of Keystone Oaks High School, signed with Pitt as a four-star prospect in 2007. In addition to being a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles, Jacobson was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that year. In addition to being ranked Pennsylvani's top player that year by Scout, he was the No. 38 player in the nation, overall.
