Knox Dismissed

Knox's incident Wednesday night, the latest of recent off-field problems for Panthers.

Pitt announced today that freshman safety Jeff Knox has been dismissed from the team for his role in an off-campus incident on Wednesday night.

Knox's incident is the team's third off-field incident since the Panthers last played on September 11. Redshirt freshman Jason Douglas was suspended indefinitely for a hit-and-run, and driving while under the influence, in the early hours of September 12. Dan Mason, a passenger in his vehicle, and Pitt's leading tackler through two games, was demoted to second-team.

Saturday, walk-on lineman Keith Coleman was suspended indefinitely for his role in an off-campus fight, late Friday night.

The news about Knox comes just hours before Pitt will kickoff against Miami, in a nationally-televised game at 7:30 pm. Entering training camp, Knox was listed as a player being limited, due to a shoulder injury in the offseason. He was also on the official team injury report for the Utah game, being declared officially out for that game, with the shoulder injury.

Knox was expected to redshirt at safety this year. He committed to Pitt in June of his junior year. He originally attended Pittsburgh Central Catholic, and was the Vikings' running back in 2007, helping them to a state championship that season. Current Panthers Tino Sunseri and Andrew Taglianetti were also on that team. Knox then enrolled at DeMatha Catholic, where he played his junior and senior seasons.
